Blues star heads back to France

Midfielder Claude Makelele has agreed a free transfer switch to Paris St Germain as Luiz Felipe Scolari continues his Chelsea clear-out

Makelele joined the Blues for £16.8 million from Real Madrid five years ago and made 217 appearances, winning two Premier League titles, two Carling Cups and an FA Cup.

The 35-year-old veteran has played a key role in Chelsea's success in the Roman Abramovich era but has been a target for PSG all summer and has now been released on a free transfer as Scolari reshuffles his squad to make way for new faces.

"Everyone at Chelsea would like to thank Claude for the service he has given us," said a club statement. "Claude has been a key part of our trophy success and we wish him well for the future.

"He will always be welcomed back to Stamford Bridge in the future either as a player or friend of the club."
